One of the similarities between heart disease and high cholesterol is that they both start with the letter “h”. After that though, the similarities get a lot more serious. Both high cholesterol and heart disease are greatly affected by your diet. Both high heart disease and cholesterol can eventually put such a strain on your heart or arteries that you could get a heart attack or a stroke. But, both high cholesterol and heart disease are, for the most part, manageable and preventable.

You Need To Be Proactive

With high cholesterol and heart disease, you can’t expect one pill or operation to solve all of your medical problems. It won’t. At best, a pill or an operation will only give you temporary relief, but soon you will be in the same trouble as before unless you take action to better your chances of not dying from high cholesterol and heart disease. These actions will seem impossible at first, but get easier to do over time.

You need to make and stick to changes in your lifestyle. This includes taking a hard look at your life, your work and your play. You need to especially look at:

What you do in order to manage your stress
If you smoke
Your diet
If you drink alcohol
Your exercise

But the most important thing you can do is go see your doctor. You can?t face fighting high cholesterol and heart disease with hope and well-wishes. You need medicines, counseling for your lifestyle changes and advice.

Your lifestyle changes to help fight your high cholesterol and heart disease should be gradual and under a doctor’s instruction. Although some believe that going cold turkey with smoking is the only effective way to quit, please talk to your doctor first about if your heart can take it. It’s like being caught between a rock and a hard place, but you need to realize that you’re not as invincible as you once thought you were.

What About Alternative Therapies?

There are some alternative therapies that have had limited success with treating obesity, high blood pressure, managing stress and even heart disease. But they all stress that you need to eat a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly. Before you start following any of these complimentary and alternative (CAM) therapies, please talk to your doctor. Some of these therapies, like Herbalism, can react badly with your life-saving medications.

[...] high cholesterol and heart disease go hand in hand Most people don’t even realize they have it until it’s too late, even though basic medical tests can reveal telltale signs like elevated triglycerides, congestive heart disease and other forms of heart disease. Some people may experience “angina pectoris,” which is the medical term for discomfort, heaviness, aching, burning, numbness or pain in the chest, left shoulder, arms, back or jaw. Often this pain will feel similar to indigestion but won’t occur around meal times. Depending on what kind of angina you’re suffering from, the pain may come after exertion (stable angina), when sleeping and while out in the cold (prinzmetal’s angina) or sometimes even just suddenly while resting (unstable angina). Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea and sweating often accompany the angina symptoms. [...]
