It could start next week or in five years. The media seems to have lost interest for the most part, but there is a lot happening. The virus continues to spread in birds across Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It is endemic in birds in Indonesia, India, South Korea, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Egypt. It is also continuing to infect people, and we are seeing human-to-human transmission - although it doesn’t appear that this is sustained at this point. The virus is acquiring the changes needed to cause a pandemic. It’s acquiring the ability to latch onto cells higher up in the human respiratory tract, and some strains have also become resistant to the antiviral drug Tamiflu. We do not have a vaccine and can’t begin to develop and manufacture one until a pandemic begins. I would love to to move on to other things, but unfortunately it is still a serious threat.
